Getting involved outside of the classroom reinforces and expands the learning that takes place in the classroom. Your sense of belonging as a student at Saint Paul College is directly linked to the time you spend exploring your own passions and interests. Student organizations and interest groups create a space for you to further develop those interests and to explore new ones, while also connecting with your peers.

Community Unity Event

The Diversity Real student group will be hosting a Twin Cities community event at Saint Paul College (235 Marshall Ave) on Wednesday, November 8th, 11am-2pm. The event is an opportunity for community organizations to showcase jobs, internships, resources & products they have available to students and campus community. Proceeds from this event go to support group activities and education. Community organizations can pay the event tabling fee below.

Honor Societies

Kappa Beta Delta, Alpha Beta Gamma Chapter

Kappa Beta Delta is an academic honor society for business majors at Saint Paul College. Eligible members will automatically receive an invitation to join KBD either in September or January via their Saint Paul College email account. There is a one-time membership fee of $40. Eligibility includes (but is not limited to) being enrolled in one of 60 business majors at the college, having completed at least 15 college-level credits, with 6 credits in their major, and having a GPA of 3.2 or higher.

Phi Theta Kappa, Beta Xi Alpha Chapter

Phi Theta Kappa is the international honor society of the two-year college. Eligible members will automatically receive an invitation to join either in September or January via their Saint Paul College email account and by regular mail. Eligibility includes (but is not limited to) being enrolled in an associate degree program; completing at least 12 credits of college-level coursework and obtaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5. There is a one-time membership fee of $60.

How do I start a student group?
We recommend that you contact Student Life to discuss the group you are interested in starting and learn about the process. You can formally start an organization or interest group by completing the New Student Group Form. All new student organizations must create a constitution which will serve as the official governing document for the organization. Please note that this document will be shared during your meeting with Student Life.

How do I get members to join my student group?
Many students ask members in their class or program if they’d like to be a part of a student group, especially if the group aligns with your academic focus. Students will post to @spcstudentlife on Instagram, table in the cafeteria, or poster aroudn campus. All student organizations are also required to send someone to the monthly Student Senate General Assembly.

How are student groups funded?
Groups are funded using student fees that are granted by Student Senate through a funding request process. They can also fundraise money using outside resources.

How do I find a student organization advisor?
That depends on what kind of student group you want to start. Student organizations are required to have an advisor, but interest groups are not required. If you were starting a Student Chefs Organization, asking faculty in the Culinary Arts Program could be a good start. However, there is no requirement your advisor have a formal connection to the purpose of the student group, only that they are a Saint Paul College staff or faculty member.

What are the responsibilities of a student organization advisor?
A complete list of responsibilities can be found in the Advisor Contract; however, their essential role is being a resource and guide for the group. They should attend all meetings and assist with setting group goals, planning activities, and act as a sounding board for other ideas or issues that may arise. Student Life provides training and resources for advisors in their efforts to support student groups. Contact student.life@dzxliu.com with questions.

How do I join Phi Theta Kappa?
Phi Theta Kappa is the national honor society for two-year institutions. To be invited to the organization, you must have completed 12 consecutive college credits that count towards an AA, AS, AAS degree or diploma and have a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher. Invitations generally come at the beginning of each semester (after grades have been posted from the previous term) and will be sent from Phi Theta Kappa headquarters. Be sure to check you junk folder settings in case your inbox filtered out your invitation. If you have questions about eligibility, please contact Student Life.

What happens at a General Assembly?
The Student Senate President leads a meeting where students can share information, make decisions, or vote on issues relating to students. Student groups are required to have a presence at every General Assembly to remain in good standing. Student groups provide updates on recent activities and students serving on various college committees or work groups share information and ask for input regarding decisions being made that affect students. A typical meeting lasts for about an hour.
